It’s been a little quiet around the blog lately but life hasn’t been quiet at all. It’s a little late in the day to go into detail right now but we enjoyed an evening together that wrapped up with chocolate cupcakes and this phonecam photo of Elizabeth as a toothless hillbilly. Thank you, dark brown chocolate cake. Thank you.
So, just in time for us to be getting a new little bundle of total irrationality, Elizabeth seems to have reached the age of reason. Sort of, anyway. Case in point: bath-time last night. Me: “OK, time to get out. Pull the plug.” Elizabeth: “I don’t think so.” Me: “If I have to pull the plug, you get out right away. If YOU pull the plug, you can play until the water’s all gone.” She pulled the plug.
She’s also attempting to write her name. She came home from day care on Friday with several pictures signed “ELETH” or “ELBETH”, etc., and is very proud. So today we were going to a friend’s birthday party, and totally forgot to buy a card. So she drew a picture of a cat, and wrote out “CAYLA” on the front. I wrote “Happy Birthday, from” and then was having her write out Elizabeth letter by letter. All was well until we got to “Z,” when she got really, really frustrated. Many tears, and many hugs. Right then, I think she wished we’d named her Ann, or Susan or something short like that.
Elizabeth will be thrilled. Every time the subject has come up, she has been quite firm that she wants me to “make it be a little sister.” One time recently, she was actually moved to tears by the suggestion that there was some possibility that it might be a boy.
The picture above is a family portrait, drawn by Elizabeth. She’ll need to do an updated one, though, somewhere around early July. That’s when the new baby will arrive.
If you’re just now hearing about this, well, the pregnancy has had its ups and downs so far. First, it was twins, but then one vanished. It was bittersweet to find that out at the OB appointment, while watching the remaining little one literally dancing around on the ultrasound. Then, we had some crazy scary screening test results, which ultimately led to me having an amniocentesis done. However, the baby is just over 17 weeks along now, and the amnio results came back saying that Elizabeth will soon have a normal, healthy little sibling (gender withheld here until all family members can be told).
So, after some scary stuff, we’re back to the eager anticipation part. I finally told my students this week. My favorite response, from a girl who always gives me trouble: “Oh, well, now we’ll be nice to you.” Say what?
Elizabeth can’t wait, although I don’t think she realizes yet what she’s in for.
We’ve been really busy around the house this weekend, catching up on chores, cooking, and even rearranging our bedroom. And always, Elizabeth is right there: “Can I help you with that?”
She’s helped to fold, put away, and hang up laundry; pick up odds and ends; put away her toys & books; make mashed potatoes & carrots; and wash dishes. Yesterday she was so worn out she just about nodded off into her dinner plate. Today, she was on the verge of tears because I’d already folded a load of laundry before she’d noticed; I had to shake a shirt out and give it to her to fold.
Chips and cheese for lunch with the cousins – I think this was one of her favorite parts of the trip to Decatur at Thanksgiving. It sure was one of ours.
